Conferences: we take a great deal of time in preparing our conferences and sourcing the Key Opinion Leaders in their chosen field. Our content is deliberately designed to be topical, timely and relevant. Each conference is tailored to give you the delegate, great insights, in order for you to learn, engage and network with your peers and industry professionals. Most conferences last 2-3 days and are hosted at top hotels in major cities around the globe. Each event has an average of 16 -18 speakers and all content is available to delegates online during and after the event at NO additional cost!

Workshops: SMi workshops take place either before or after our flagship conferences and are an opportunity to have more intimate discussions with the key opinion leaders and allow the delegate to delve deeper into the subject matter. We also encourage the delegate to play a greater role here, by interacting with the workshop leader. Workshops are normally a half day but occasionally last a full day running from 9am - 5pm. Each workshop leader prepares the correct resources for you to use during the workshop.

 

Masterclasses: SMi Masterclasses take the latest hot topics and turn them into practical, interactive training sessions. They cover a wide variety of subjects across multiple industries and are suitable for both high level strategists and/or individuals new to an industry or concept. All courses are CPD accredited and therefore also offer measurable value as part of your continued professional development.

 

   
Miles Dixon

Miles Dixon: Managing Director

Miles has over 15 years’ experience in the conference and events industry and started his career producing and growing large scale conferences at Worldwide Business Research. Having left WBR as head of production for the European operation, Miles then moved to IQPC (Defence IQ) where he ran the international defence conference business and was promoted to Managing Director. Subsequently Miles moved to Dubai and lead the conference business at Dubai World Trade Centre. After returning to London, Miles joined the SMi Group in 2014.

Miles believes passionately that the conference is still the best way for businesses to connect and exchange strategic information.

With a proven track record of launching and growing events in many sectors and regions, Miles builds an entrepreneurial spirit into the teams he leads and knows that success in the events industry is only gained when outstanding value is delivered to the customers you serve.

Miles is a passionate West Londoner and has interests outside of work in politics and property.

Sadia Malick

Sadia Malick: Director

Having spent 25 years selling to an international audience, it is safe to say that the sales environment is Sadia’s passion. She has also displayed an expertise at passing her successful techniques and knowledge onto others. Global businesses in destinations as diverse as London, Paris, Dubai, Singapore and Rio De Janeiro have all succumbed to her abilities and charm.

Her career change came by chance after a dinner on a hot and sunny evening in Central London when SMi’s MD invited her to run SMi’s overseas business. After careful consideration she joined SMi at the end of 2011 and quickly established herself as a major player in the Defence & Security sector.

In only her fourth month in the business, she set a new monthly sales record for the sponsorship team at SMi.

Sadia lives in Crouch End and can usually be found chilling in one of the many coffee bars in the area.

Ann Kiely

Ann Kiely: Director

Ann joined SMi in 2001. Her initial responsibility was to ensure all financial controls were in place. With over 30 years experience working across the SME environment - including the events industry - Ann has worked on several ad hoc projects in the company ranging from the office move, to sourcing venues and system implementation.

Ann spreads her time between London, the Kent coast and the Irish Countryside.

Graduate Conference Producer - Pharmaceuticals

The SMi Group are seeking a Graduate Pharmaceutical Conference Producer to work in their international pharmaceutical portfolio.

The Conference Producer role is to gather commercial research and market intelligence to create a value driven agenda for C-level executives. Once this agenda is written and validated by the industry, you will invite key industry figures and market experts to present briefings and case studies at the conference. Our B2B pharmaceutical conferences aim to offer senior delegates the learning and networking platform to improve their internal capabilities.

The Conference Producer also acts as a project manager, supporting other divisions throughout the campaign to market the conference to both sponsors and delegates, ensuring the commercial success of events.

The ideal candidate should be willing to learn in the role, they will have a very proactive work ethic and driven approach to both telephone and face to face research. The candidate will also be a natural relationship builder and feel comfortable engaging with senior figures who shape and lead the pharmaceutical industry.

Graduate Conference Producer - Defence

The SMi Group are seeking a Graduate Defence conference producer to work in their defence and security portfolio.

The role of a conference producer is to gather commercial research and market intelligence in order to create a value driven agenda that mirrors the needs of the markets you are working in. Once this agenda is written and validated by the industry, you will contact key industry figures and market experts to invite them to present briefings and knowledge at the conference itself. The goal is to create a complete conference programme full of expert speakers that will help other parts of the industry advance their processes and capabilities by attending.

Once the conference is being marketed and sold by your conference team, you are then the person project managing and supporting other job functions ensure the event is a success, both in terms of market delivery and commercially for the business.

This role will suit a candidate with high intelligence, a very proactive work ethic and driven approach to telephone and face to face research. This person will also be a natural relationship builder and feel comfortable engaging with senior figures who shape and lead the defence industry.

An interest in the defence and security market is preferred, but certainly not essential.

Sponsorship Support

Your primary responsibility is to provide continual support to the SMi senior management team with a primary focus on sponsorship. Ensuring all information relating to sponsorship deals are correctly maintained and developed. This will include liaising with all teams and departments within SMi to gather and action information - logos, synopsis and guest forms. Taking ownership and responsibility for relevant tasks and completing to agreed timescales and deadlines.

 



WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SMI Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
